103. however and comma use Empty 103. however and comma use

Thu Feb 09, 2023 4:15 pm
A common mistake is to put only a comma before "however" when there should be either a full stop or a semicolon. A parenthetical "however" ("In academic writing, however, there should be. . .") has a comma before it and after it; "however" as an adverb is preceded by a comma ("It is true, however much you don't like it"); but otherwise "however" must follow a full stop or semicolon. "We went to the meeting place, however he was not there" should be "We went to the meeting place; however, he was not there."
